One of only ten WWII Focke-Wulf 190 German fighters in the world
San Antonio is intimately entwined with aviation history, most importantly as the birthplace of military aviation. You can retrace this history at the Texas Air Museum, located at historic Stinson Field, the second oldest general aviation airport in the Untied States. The exhibits and artifacts at the museum pay tribute to the pioneers of aviation and those pilots who gave their lives to defend freedom. You will see rare vintage aircrafts, including one of only ten WWII Focke-Wulf 190 German fighters in the world, and the Bleriot which famous stunt pilot Katherine Stinson flew in 1914. The museum also exhibits a growing collection of artifacts, including military uniforms, weapons and memorabilia representing the aviators of every American war .The Texas Air Museum traces the history of American military aviation to its origins in San Antonio. “Just about every pilot who ever wore a star of any kind was trained here at Kelly, Brooks or Lackland Air Force Base,” said John Tosh, the director of the museum. John, who originally joined the museum’s Board of Directors in 1992 and served as chairman of the board for several years, was instrumental in bringing the museum from Rio Hondo to San Antonio in 1999, where he believes it belongs. John volunteers six days a week at the museum along with a dedicated staff. They warmly invite you to explore history and browse the many model plane kits, caps, t-shirts and more in the gift shop at the Texas Air Museum.
